A Tu-22M3 missile bomber of the army of the aggressor country russia crashed in the Irkutsk Oblast of the russian federation on the evening of Wednesday, April 2.

The russian propaganda agency TASS reported this with reference to the russian Ministry of Defense.

"The Tu-22M3 plane crashed in the Irkutsk Oblast. The crew ejected, the pilot died," the message says.

The bomber crashed in a deserted area. According to preliminary information, the cause of the disaster was a technical malfunction.

A search and rescue team arrived at the site of the Tu-22M3 crash and is evacuating the surviving crew members of the plane.

The Governor of the Irkutsk Oblast, Igor Kobzev, reported that the Tu-22M3 bomber crashed near the settlement of Buret of the Usolskiy District.

According to him, the crew of four ejected, but one pilot died during the landing.

Kobzev added that there were no damages or casualties among civilians as a result of the Tu-22M3 crash.

The russian Telegram channel SHOT writes that during the crash, the bomber damaged power lines. Because of this, one of the districts of the Irkutsk Oblast was allegedly left without electricity. This is probably the Usolskiy District.

Videos shot by eyewitnesses of the plane crash appeared on the network. In them, you can see how local residents find multiple wreckage of the bomber.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on March 24 it became known that the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck a rear air base of the russian army in the Belgorod Oblast. We managed to destroy four Ka-52 and Mi-8 helicopters.

    Conscription

Russia holds two annual conscription cycles in the spring and autumn, with men aged 18-30 eligible for service. This spring’s conscription campaign will run from April 1 to July 15.

Monday’s decree signed by President Vladimir Putin outlined plans to draft 160,000 men this spring, an increase from 150,000 in 2024 and 134,500 in 2022, the year Russia launched its full-scale offensive against Ukraine.

The age cap was also raised from 27 in 2023, expanding the pool of eligible draftees.

More than 8,000 ex-convicts serving in Ukrainian army
More than 8,000 ex-convicts are currently serving in the Ukrainian army, the country's ministry of justice reports.
The ministry states that as of April, more than 8,000 volunteers, who had previously served prison sentences, had joined Ukrainian troops on the battlefield.
This became possible after a law adopted in May 2024 allowed for the early release of former convicts.
The first groups of volunteers joined combat units in August last year.
There are also 900 additional applications for parole to serve in the Ukrainian army.

What do we know about soldier recruitment?
The figure comes amid a drive by both Ukraine and Russia to recruit more soldiers.
In February, Ukraine's defence ministry launched a recruitment drive for young people, encouraging 18 to 24-year-olds to serve in the military for a year.
This is because Ukraine's armed forces are heavily outnumbered by their Russian adversaries on the frontlines.
And last year, under pressure to bring more soldiers into the military, Ukraine's parliament approved a new law on mobilisation, reducing the draft age from 27 to 25.
Elsewhere, Vladimir Putin yesterday ordered a further 160,000 Russian men between the ages of 18 and 30 to be called up, with the new order to be completed by 15 July.

Donald Trump has not included Russia on its expansive list of countries that will face major new tariffs starting today as Vladimir Putin’s top negotiator held meetings in Washington.

At the same time, war-hit Ukraine is facing 10 per cent tariffs from the US administration.

The White House has not explained why Russia will not face tariffs.

Mr Putin's investment envoy and one of the most US-savvy members of Russia's elite, Kirill Dmitriev, met with US officials in Washington yesterday. The highest-ranking Russian official to visit the US since the invasion in February 2022, he is visiting on invitation from Mr Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

His visit comes at a time when the Trump administration continues to press Russia and Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire. As he unveiled his tariffs on Wednesday, Mr Trump hailed “good cooperation” between Russia and Ukraine while underlining his desire to stop the war.

The White House has defended its decision to not include Russia on its expansive list of countries that will face major new tariffs starting today.

US sanctions on Moscow already “preclude any meaningful trade”, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Axios on Wednesday. At the same time, war-hit Ukraine is facing 10 per cent tariffs from the US administration.

Ukraine and Russia continue accusing each other of violating an agreement to halt attacks on energy facilities. There are no signs of a ceasefire in sight.

Russia's defense ministry announced on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces staged two attacks on Russian energy infrastructure earlier this month.

The ministry said that the first strike using an unmanned aerial vehicle hit a substation in the western Russian region of Kursk, causing blackouts.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Ukraine continues to attack Russian energy facilities on a daily basis.

He said Moscow will patiently explain "Ukraine's unwillingness to do something for peace" to Washington.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media on Wednesday that Russia had struck an energy facility in Sumy in northeastern Ukraine. He said Putin does not even want to ensure a partial ceasefire.

Last month, the Financial Times reported that Moscow had enlisted a close friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin to restart gas supplies to Europe via Nord Stream with the backing of American investors.
So far, Germany has pushed back against reviving the pipeline. “Talking about the potential of Nord Stream 2 … is completely the wrong direction of discussion,” the country’s outgoing Economy Minister Robert Habeck told reporters in Brussels last week.
But there are increasing signs Berlin’s next government may take a different stance. Key center-right party officials involved in coalition talks last week told POLITICO the country could return to Russia for gas once peace is secured in Ukraine.
